Lesson 3: Flying in the Wind and Understanding Turns

turning with beach fly8ma pilot ground school lesson 3

Turning an airplane:

In this lesson, we’ll cover the basic aerodynamics of what happens when you turn the airplane, as well as the proper procedure for executing a steep turn. This will include:

  • An overview of aircraft load factor, and how load factor affects aircraft performance.
  • An overview of the aircraft power curve, and necessary considerations.
  • An explanation of how regular and steep turns are performed.

Crosswind Corrections:

As the wind is always approaching us from different angles, we’ll also cover the basics of what you need to know in order to:

  • Perform safe crosswind takeoffs and landings.
  • Safely taxi the airplane to and from the runway in windy conditions.

As a pilot only two bad things can happen to you and one of them will be:

a. One day you will walk out to the aircraft knowing that it is your last flight.

b. One day you will walk out to the airplane not knowing that it is your last flight.
